1-day (& night) Healing Retreat in Okinawa, Japan

After welcoming my most recent clients from Seattle, I felt inspired to share more about this in-person offering for those curious about a healing retreat and hands-on session here in Okinawa.

This offering has been more than two decades in the making, and I’d love to share a little of its story with you.

From the age of 21, I began traveling alone to places that called to my soul — Japan first, then Italy, India, France, England, Peru, and many other places across the U.S., Caribbean islands, and Canada. Looking back, I see that what I was really learning was about the meaning of family, love, and the human heart, in ways my mind could never have imagined.

For anyone who feels drawn to Okinawa, I hope to offer that same sense of courage and welcome: a memorable, heart-opening experience of connection and healing.

Okinawa was always at the top of my heart's list because it’s where my mother and maternal ancestors are from. As a child growing up in the south, I longed to meet my family there. It felt not just difficult, but impossible. Yet I never gave up on that dream, and at 22 my chance finally came.

I was set to travel to Tokyo for a study-abroad program and, by sheer will, convinced the program director to let me go to Okinawa first on my own, meeting the rest of the group later in Tokyo. My childhood wish came true.

Meeting my relatives for the first time was not what I expected. We were adults from two very different worlds. Not everyone was thrilled to meet me, but for my younger heart, simply being there was thrilling.

I was captivated by the people’s mannerisms, which helped me understand my mother’s heart and the culture she left behind. They moved fluidly, like water, yet seemed bonded to the earth — outwardly shy but radiating warmth and power when they spoke, like the sun. A long-buried knowing began to awaken in me about my heritage, yes, but also about my own soul-self.

Okinawa stayed with me as I returned to southern California to finish college and then moved to New York City to pursue my dreams of being an artist for peace. Though my connection to Okinawa was deeply personal, I always sensed there was something universally healing about Okinawa for anyone who could visit, even once.

About a decade later, by providence, I traveled there again. By then I had become a full-time professional healer seeing clients, teaching Reiki classes, and holding monthly group shamanic ceremonies in my healing space in Manhattan’s East Village. That guided trip changed me. Something in my heart shifted in a way I couldn’t ignore. I returned again and again, until I finally understood: I was meant to continue my healing work from Okinawa.

Many people know Okinawa as a cluster of tiny markings on a map, an archipelago surrounded by the vast South Pacific Ocean and East China Sea. But Okinawa is much bigger energetically than it appears. Beyond the surface, an eternal space exists untouched by linear time — a vibrant, living realm the heart senses and is nourished by.

When we revere and give our sincere attention to Okinawa’s sacred earth, we immediately feel more connected with our own sacred earth within: our bodies, spirits, and minds. It's one of those rare places still stewarded by souls who understand its sacredness.

So it is my honor and privilege to welcome those called to Okinawa, and to guide each person to connect with its natural healing energy — and with yourself — in ways that will continue to nurture you long after you leave.

Now that you know how this retreat offering came to be, let me introduce the beautiful space where we’ll meet. It took me three years of searching to find it, and then another year of carefully building rapport with the owners before I could welcome my first clients.

It’s a local wellness inn built and run by a wonderful Japanese couple whose love and reverence for Okinawa infuse every detail. Located in a small village about an hour’s drive from the airport, it’s surrounded by nature spirits and energy vortexes (“power spots,” as they’re called in Japan). The intention is simple: to welcome you home.

We’ll begin with a Reiki Tea Ceremony and then gently transition into a Mystic Medicine Healing session. Afterwards, we’ll take a short walk to a nearby beach revered by the locals for a water ritual and some time to relax by the ocean. As the sun begins to set, we’ll return to the inn. This marks the end of our time together, and your room will be ready for you to rest at your own pace before dinner.

Each of the three rooms is uniquely and thoughtfully designed, each with its own ocean view.

To help guests unplug and experience a short digital detox, there is intentionally no Wi-Fi or TV at the inn. This allows the nervous system to rest and the body to deeply relax, integrating the healing received from your session and ceremony. You’ll be able to fall asleep to the sounds of nature and the ocean winds. (If necessary, you’re welcome to bring your own router or rent one from the airport.)

In the morning, complimentary tea or coffee is served in traditional Okinawan pottery. It’s highly recommended to take the short 2-minute walk through a secret pathway to a popular local bakery to pick up some delicacies of your choosing and bring them back to enjoy comfortably with your tea or coffee.

Much thought, spirited effort, and collaboration has gone into every detail of this offering. My hope is that you feel very well cared for during this 1-day (and night) healing retreat in Okinawa.

"I met Olivea back in 2016 when we were both living in New York City. At that time, I began my personal awakening journey. I was desperately searching for answers about what was happening to me, and that journey led me to Olivea. Olivea is an incredibly gentle, loving, and caring soul.

Seven years later, Olivea and I met again in Okinawa. Okinawa is one of the five blue zones in the world. My boyfriend and I wanted to visit Okinawa to learn about its culture and people. That evening, I found tears rolling down my cheek. Normally, I would hide and brush aside those feelings. I decided to share it with my boyfriend. I told my boyfriend that I felt sad, but I didn’t know what I was sad about. My conscious mind didn’t understand what was going on, but my heart remained open to feel the emotions that emerged. When we bid farewell to Olivea that evening, we saw a beautiful rainbow over the sea. It was mystic and beautiful.

It has been two weeks since I had the Mystic Medicine Healing Ceremony with Olivea. I am back in the US. Internally, I am continuing to process and heal a myriad of suppressed memories and emotions that are being released.

Olivea and Okinawa taught me what I needed to learn and incorporate into my life in the US to live more aligned with my being. I became more aware of my life; I can’t list out everything here because the list is too long, but I want to share some of them.

- I find myself cooking, eating, and enjoying mostly vegetable dishes effortlessly.

- I find myself having more patience in getting things done one thing at a time instead of rushing to get five things done at the same time. As a result, I can concentrate better and complete my tasks instead of leaving them open-ended.

- I notice myself more when I am not fully present in doing something.

- Everything in nature has an inherent healing energy. If we can understand that and treat what we have gently and with gratitude, we can tap into that innate healing energy effortlessly.

- All food either heals us or damages us.

- Being present means putting your thoughts, care, and love into what you are doing. When you really put care and love into whatever you do, others can feel that, and it's very healing."

It is difficult to explain in normal words how extraordinary Olivea is as my experience was ineffable.

I contacted her last minute to organize a schedule in Okinawa while she knew nothing about me. After having a brief screening call with Olivea within less than 48hours I was sitting with her starting my first sessions hosted in the house of heartful Mitsuyo.
